ITALYThis peninsula is located in the middle of the old Roman Empire, sharing borders with France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia. The Mediterranean islands of Sicily and Sardinia and the independent enclaves of San Marino and Vatican City are also in Italian territory.
The Italian geography is very varied: the Alps in the north, the Apennine mountains in the north-west and the Po river valley in the Milan area. Tuscany area hosts cities of great interest for tourists, such as Florence, where the David of Michelangelo is to be found, or Lucca, where Leonardo Da Vinci spent his life.
In Rome, the capital city, the visitor can find the Vatican Museum; the Sixtine Chapel; the National Gallery of Antique Art, displaying works by Rafael; the Etruscan Museum; the Modern Art Gallery, and of course, its elegant baroque places and medieval streets.
Venice, one of the richest cities in the 12th century, is one of the favourite destinations for romantics, due to the charm of its gondolas and channels.
Sorrento, Pompeii, Naples and Palermo, in the south, enjoy the Mediterranean weather. There are also two famous volcanoes: the Vesuvius, close to Naples, and the Etna, located in Sicily and still active.
Sardinia has spectacular cliffs, incredibly beautiful dusks and excellent services.
Italy offers the visitors art, traditions, culture, cuisine, wines and, overall, history.
