NORWAYBesides its famous fiords, Norway also has large mountain chains, striking glaciars, valleys crossed by rivers and majestic forests. It borders Sweden in the East.
Oslo is the oldest capital of the Skandinavian countries. Its centre has beautiful neoclassical buildings, broad avenues and parks with gardens. The forest area of Nordmarka offers a notion of Norway's beautiful rural landscape.
Akershus Slott and Hjemmefront-museet, Oslo's castle, was remodeled into a luxurious Renaissance residence, and aker Brygge, the former shipyard, has transformed into a lively shopping centre. The neoclassic Royal Palace Kongelige Slottet, the Nasjonalgalleriet and the Munch-museet, which is entirely dedicated to Edvard Munch, are also worth a visit. On the Bygdoy peninsula you will find the Maritime Museum Vikingsskiphuset. Bergen is a beautiful town with colourful medieval buildings, and its lively harbour is surrounded by seven mountains. Its market Fiskerorvet offers frish fish, handicraft and food. Troldhaugen, a lovely village that exhibits paintings and woodcuts, is also worth a visit. And of course it is possible to take cruises through the fiords. Sognefjord, in the North, is the world's longest and deepest and offers an impressive landscape.
Despite Norway's Nordic location, the weather on the contintental region is surprisingly mild. Norway is the only northern country facing open waters. Up over the arctic circle, the northern lights and the long summer nights are spectacular.
