The Slovenian Republic lies east of Italy, north of Croatia and south of Hungary and Austria. Besides Slovenian, Hungarian and Italian are also spoken.
It has a short coast that opens to the Adriatic Sea at the Gulf of Trieste. The Julian Alps cover most of its surface in the northeast. Here lies mount Triglav, the country’s highest peak (2.863 m). In this area also lies the beautiful lake Bled. In the south you will find the Karavanke chain, the cristal-clear massiv of Pohorje (1.540 m) and the limestone plateaus of Notranjsko and Dosejsko. On the other hand, the Karst is a limestone plateau that stretches from Ljubljana, the capital, to the coast. It hosts great caves with underground rivers, like for example the 19 km long cave of Postojna.
Slovenia enjoys three types of climate: alpine in the northeast, with mild summers and cold winters; continental in the inland, with cold winters and warm summers; and typical mediterranean at the coast, with warm summers and mild winters. It also has lavish oak, beech and conifer forests.
At the ski resort of Kranjska Gora you can practice ice climbing on a number of frozen waterfalls, as well as try out ski-jumping at the World Cup facilities.
